Cybersecurity is seriously coming onto the agenda for manufacturers of machinery and equipment when the Machinery Regulation enters into force.
Here is what you need to know so far if you manufacture or purchase machinery/equipment ☝️
"EN 50742 - Protection against corruption" will be the first harmonised standard under the Machinery Regulation dealing with the new essential health and safety requirement "Protection against corruption".
It is expected to be published and subsequently harmonised under the Machinery Regulation 2023/1230.
Until then, and certainly also after, one should look towards the IEC 62443 series, which is the international go-to standard for cybersecurity in industrial environments.
IEC 62443 focuses on the entire plant and IT infrastructure (Operational Technology), meaning the systems that control physical machinery, robots, power plants, and factory installations.
EN 50742 focuses on the actual safety-related control system of the individual machine and will become a direct requirement for CE marking of the machine.
My impression is that cybersecurity is already taken seriously by most industrial companies, at least up to the switch where the machine is connected. 🤔
But I still believe that many have yet to address the actual machinery and plant equipment—especially those machines that have a few years behind them—and ask themselves a few very simple questions:
- Do you have backups of the PLC programs for your machines if they were suddenly deleted?
- Are there machines and equipment permanently connected to the network that might not even need it, thereby posing a constant risk?
- What is the plan if the machines are hit, where is the machinery software stored, and who can get them running again?
Personally, I think Cybersecurity is an incredibly exciting topic, and as mentioned, there are many practical steps that companies can start taking right now.
However, it requires people who have in-depth knowledge of the technical aspects surrounding the machine/plant and especially its control systems, combined with technical standards in the field.
